Wide range of services in the conference and congress sector/ Congress initiative promotes marketing

Dresden, the capital of Saxony and home to 480,000 people, already has an excellent reputation as a city of art and culture. It is famed for the countless treasures in its museums, the breathtaking beauty of its architecture, and the diversity and high standards of its musical life, as well as the surprisingly romantic landscape stretching along the River Elbe into the heart of the city. In June 2005, the Elbe Valley at Dresden was officially designated a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.

It is hardly surprising, then, that Dresden welcomes nearly 8 million tourists per year, accounting for approx. 2.7 million overnight stays. In 2004 alone, more than 680,000 people took part in 12,700 conferences and congresses.

The University of Technology, with over 34,000 students, and numerous other institutions of higher education and research, including 30 institutes operated by the Fraunhofer and Max Planck societies, make Dresden an important scientific centre. In particular, the medical faculty with its many research institutions has made a strong international impact.

Furthermore, Dresden is an important commercial centre with ultra-modern production facilities for the electronics, pharmaceutical, precision technology and biotechnology industries, and most recently also for the car industry in the form of the Transparent Factory (Die Gläserne Manufaktur) by Volkswgen. In the sphere of nanotechnology, Dresden even has chances of becoming one of the most important locations in Europe.

A development that is unique in Germany is the formation of an interest group made up of 21 companies involved in the congress sector. The organisation, called “DresdenConventionPartners”, was founded on 6th April 2005 with the aim of strengthening Dresden’s position as a congress venue and developing new marketing ideas. Dr Michael Hupe, Managing Director of Dresden Airport, was chosen as spokesman for this initiative. The members of the DresdenConventionPartners include conference centres, conference and congress hotels, congress agencies, technical service providers and transport companies.

With the opening of the International Congress Center in the spring of 2004, Dresden became an even more attractive venue for congresses. Located right on the bank of the River Elbe and close to the historic centre of the city, the Congress Center is a particularly interesting setting for congresses of all kinds.

The architecture of the Congress Center is sure to inspire congress participants. It was designed by the Hanover firm Storch/Ehlers and has a capacity of 4,150. Seen from the Elbe, the building has a transparent, wave-like structure looking out over the Dresden skyline.

For even larger-scale events, use can be made of Trade Fair Hall 1. Dresden Trade Fair is located approximately one kilometre to the west of the Congress Center and is a successful combination of traditional and modern architecture. In addition to many state-of-the-art conference centres and hotels, there are more than 25 unusual venues for events, such as castles and stately homes, industrial plants and museums, each providing its own special atmosphere.
