The lovely countryside around Dresden is as rich in places of cultural and historic interest as the city itself. On the fringe of the city lies Pillnitz Palace, the former summer residence of the Saxon court, which houses today an arts and crafts museum. Harmoniously blended in the countryside, the palace is the most perfect example of chinoiserie, a form of decorative art based on imitation of Chinese and Japanese motifs.

This art form enjoyed great popularity during the reign of Augustus the Strong and is an integral feature of the Dresden Baroque. The beautiful park around Pillnitz Palace combines a variety of styles; while one section conforms to the rigid artistic patterns of the Baroque period, another is laid out as an English landscape garden.

A romantic experience of a quite different kind is afforded by the National Park of Saxon Switzerland. With its bizarre rocks and cliffs, it is a paradise for rock climbers and walkers. The most convenient as well as most delightful way of getting to know Saxon Switzerland is a boat trip on the River Elbe with one of the historic paddle steamer.

The city of Meissen lies 25 km to the north-west of Dresden and counts at present 35,000 inhabitants. Meissen, the cradle of Saxony, looks back on more than a thousand years of history. The visitor is received by a late medieval city, almost unchanged in its basic structure.

The buildings high up on the castle hill - the Gothic cathedral and the Albrechtsburg, the first castle ever on German soil to serve administrative and representative purposes - bear witness to German and Saxon history.

Since the early 18th century Meissen has been the home of the delicate porcelain ware marked with the sign of the blue swords that has become known as Dresden china. Meissen is also the centre of one of the world's most northerly wine-growing areas. The vineyards on the slopes of the River Elbe, on the city's heights and in a number of neighbouring villages produce a dry wine with a distinctive bouquet.

Another wine-growing centre is the suburb of Radebeul to the west of Dresden. In the midst of the vineyards lies the "Hofl|össnitz" mansion, once a princely country seat and today a vinicultural museum. Radebeul is also well known for its Karl May Museum. The former house of this popular writer of numerous books about Native Americans has become a place of pilgrimage for his young readers.

From Radebeul you can enjoy a ride on a historic steam locomotive train to Moritzburg which crosses forests, lakes and meadows. The Moritzburg hunting lodge, a Baroque building of superbly clear lines which blends harmoniously with the landscape, was built in its present form between 1723 and 1736 at the behest of Augustus the Strong. An annual highlight not only for horse lovers are the stallion parades held by the Moritzburg stud farm. (dwt)
